About a year ago I wrote that I met Eric Clapton. In the post I included ten examples why I believe Clapton is God. Well, here's two more. The first example is a pulled from an excellent audience recording from Eric's 1994 "blues" tour. The second example is Eric and Buddy Guy from 1987 and it is one of the down-and-dirtiest, funky, greasy blues numbers you will ever hear. As an added bonus I've included the video of this performance in addition to the complete 13 minute long performance as a mp3 download. Enjoy.

Beatles "Love"

Within You Without You / Tomorrow Never Knows

I listened to the "new" Beatles release today titled "Love." Since the Beatles haven't officially recorded as a band since 1969 I was under the impression that this release was same wine different bottle. I was way wrong.

Love begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it became obvious that this was far more than just another Beatles compilation. Now, there's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley, some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Case in point...

Now you may say, "why mess with perfection?" Well, why not? Especially, if the Beatles are backing the idea and their old producer George Martin is behind the controls. That said, I don't know if I would recommend this to brand new Beatles fan. This album is for the folks who really know the music. They're the ones who'll really appreciate this for its creativity.

Here's a 30 sec. clip I put on YouTube. It's Martin Mull repeating a joke Tim Conway told him. I'm not sure it's so funny because:

1. I can hear Tim Conway tell it OR
2. Martin Mull is so happy telling it
3. it's great that when Tim Conway and Martin Mull got together, they told jokes.

Whatever reason, it's funny.

The Blizzard of '96

It was ten years ago this weekend that Philadelphia and parts of New Jersey were hammered by the greatest one-storm, snowfall totals ever. In Philadelphia, the storm left 30.7 inches of snow, breaking the old one-storm snowfall total by 9.4 inches - the previous record was the Feb. 11-12, 1983, storm that blanketed the City of Brotherly Love with 21.3 inches of snow. This week's blizzard exceeded the 12 inches of snow left during 1993's so-called "Storm of the Century."

Central Park in New York City recorded 20.2 inches of snow in this storm, making it the third highest snowfall ever there. On parts of nearby Staten Island, N.Y., more than 27 inches of snow fell. LaGuardia International Airport, N.Y., recorded 24 inches of snow, which exceeds the normal for the entire season of 22.6 inches.
